about this tour

the tradition

The Day of the Dead, or Día de los Muertos, is a vibrant Mexican tradition celebrated on November 1st and 2nd. Unlike Halloween, it’s not about fear, but about honoring and remembering loved ones who have passed away. Families create elaborate altars (ofrendas) in their homes or at cemeteries, adorned with marigold flowers, candles, photos, and the favorite foods and drinks of the deceased. Sugar skulls and colorful skeleton figures are common, symbolizing the sweetness of life and the acceptance of death as a natural part of it.

On these days, families often visit cemeteries to clean and decorate graves, spending time there to celebrate the lives of those they’ve lost. It’s a time filled with music, stories, and sharing, where death is seen as a continuation of life, and the memories of loved ones are kept alive in a festive, loving atmosphere.

THE DAY OF THE DEAD TOUR

Our tour takes you to San Andrés Tecomitl Cemetery and the historic town of Mixquic, two of the most vibrant and authentic locations to witness this unique holiday.

We’ll start at San Andrés Tecomitl Cemetery, where you’ll see families lovingly decorating graves with marigolds, candles, and personal mementos. The atmosphere is filled with warmth, music, and the scent of traditional foods, as locals honor their loved ones in a beautiful, heartfelt way.

Next, we’ll visit Mixquic, famous for its deeply rooted Día de los Muertos customs. As the night falls, the town comes alive with candlelit processions, altars, and cultural performances that bring the spirits of the dead close to the living. You’ll have the chance to immerse yourself in the local traditions, taste authentic foods, and witness the enchanting “Lighting of the Candles” ceremony, where the cemetery is illuminated by thousands of flickering lights.

The day of the dead tour is a rare opportunity to experience the true essence of Día de los Muertos, connecting with Mexico’s cultural heritage in a deeply personal and meaningful way.
